Susan de Weger

Susan de Weger is a freelance orchestral musician who recently graduated with a Master of Music Performance from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.   Her music career started in the Baritone section of Townsville Brass Band, with her younger sister and father completing the Euphonium and Trombone sections respectively.

After completing a Bachelor of Music on Horn at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music she decided that blowing raspberries into a shiny pipe for money was a foolish endeavor and left music to pursue a career as a Producer with the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge.  Susan relocated to the UK to take up the role of General Manager and after a number of years hung up her backstage pass to join her husband as General Manager of their IT consulting practice.  Their combined expertise supported the development of this practice into a multi-million dollar business with clients across Europe.

Susan relocated her young family to Australia in 2007 and picked up the Horn in 2009 after a break of 16 years.  She has since performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and regularly performs with Melbourne Opera.

During her Masters studies at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Susan developed an interest in the emerging discipline of arts entrepreneurship education.  She was awarded the Hugh Rogers Fellowship in 2014 to evaluate the Entrepreneurial Musicianship Department at the New England Conservatory in Boston.  On her return, she established a consultancy practice delivering specialist classical career development initiatives.  Current clients include the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM).

Susan has instigated and designed an innovative specialised career program for MCM, and 2016 sees her launch this program as Project Coordinator and Sessional Lecturer.

Susan is a passionate advocate for entrepreneurship in arts education and an excellent example of the transferability of a music education to success in other industries. Her leadership skills have created and transformed businesses and social ventures internationally. Susan is educating and inspiring musicians to thrive in the 21st Century.
